The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Clarence W. Duffield (MCSN: 428438), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Scout of the Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 15 March 1945. In the face of intense hostile fire from mortars, rockets, grenades and small arms, Sergeant Duffield courageously led a patrol in front of friendly lines to search and lure the enemy from the caves in an area which had been holding up the advance of our troops. Fully aware of the extreme personal danger involved under these hazardous conditions, he continued his search and assisted in the capture of two prisoners and obtained valuable information which greatly facilitated the further movement of troops in this pocket of resistance. By his bravery, initiative and devotion to duty throughout, Sergeant Duffield upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
