The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Jackson M. Douthit (MCSN: 886954), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Point Man of a Combat Patrol of Company L, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 5 May 1945. Braving intense hostile fire, Private First Class Douthit boldly crawled forward alone to the embrasure of an enemy pillbox and, attacking the position with hand grenades, destroyed it and killed four of the enemy. By his fighting skill and coolness under fire, he enabled his unit to advance quickly and seize its objective. His devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
