The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant George E. Dosch (MCSN: 0-36343), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Machine Gun Platoon Leader of Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 24 February 1945. When his Company Commander became a casualty, Second Lieutenant Dosch immediately assumed control of the company which was then suffering heavy casualties. Carrying out a personal reconnaissance in the face of heavy hostile small-arms fire, he skillfully withdrew with minimum losses two of his platoons which had been located in positions extremely vulnerable to enemy fire. Quickly reorganizing his company, he directed the consolidation of the position and held it despite intense hostile fire. In the afternoon, he led his unit in an attack which resulted in the seizure and occupation of a salient dividing the Japanese forces, thereby contributing materially to the success of the operation. By his aggressive leadership, tactical ability and coolness under fire, Second Lieutenant Dosch upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
