The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Arthur E. F. Dooley (MCSN: 351395), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Operations Clerk of the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September 1944. Advancing beyond the front lines to an open field swept by enemy mortar, machine-gun and sniper fire, Sergeant Dooley administered first aid to wounded Marines stranded there and, after caring for their wounds, carried the casualties one at a time to the comparative safety of the landing beach. During the entire period of his Battalion’s participation in the assault, he acted as Scout and Messenger between units of the Battalion, thereby assisting the Battalion Commander in controlling his units. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Dooley and the United States Naval Service.
