The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Samuel H. Donavan (MCSN: 261766), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving aboard a U.S. Warship, the U.S.S. BROOKLYN (CL-40), during the assault on and occupation of French Morocco from November 8 to 11, 1942. In a fierce engagement with hostile surface forces, Platoon Sergeant Donavan, serving as a member of the crew of an anti-aircraft gun, was painfully wounded by enemy shellfire. With complete disregard for his own suffering and discomfort, he courageously and voluntarily returned to his post immediately after his injuries had been treated and dressed. His indomitable fighting spirit and valiant devotion to duty under extremely adverse conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
