The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert S. Dole (MCSN: 397439), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ammunition Corporal of Company G, Third Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, on the night of 7 June 1945. When his company was holding a ridge which was constantly being counterattacked by the enemy, Private First Class Dole was assigned to carry food and ammunition to the front lines and to remain there in order to assist in the night defense of the position. Crawling forward of the main defensive line and stationing himself on the crest of the ridge, he fought gallantly throughout the night although in a vulnerable position and suffering from a shrapnel wound in his leg caused by an enemy grenade. Alerting the men of his platoon as the hostile forces formed for each attack, he inflicted numerous casualties on the enemy with hand grenades and small-arms fire. By his courageous initiative and fighting spirit, Private First Class Dole inspired the men in his company, depleted by heavy casualties, to hold the vital position throughout the night and to continue successfully the attack on the following morning. His unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
