The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Henry J. Dix (MCSN: 348860), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, October 25, 1942. When an infiltration of hostile troops was reported to have worked its way behind the lines of his battalion, Private Dix, accompanied by two other Marines, successfully located and closed in upon fifteen Japanese in a deep draw. Armed with only pistols, rifles and hand grenades, he and his comrades rushed the emplacement, killed all the enemy and destroyed their heavy machine gun. His heroic conduct, employed at great personal risk in the face of overwhelming odds, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
