The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John DiLavore (MCSN: 453333), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 10 July 1944. After crossing a fire-swept, open field to secure a hospital corpsman and badly needed blood plasma for several of his wounded comrades, Private First Class Di Lavore re-crossed the field to guide an ambulance to the wounded men after the corpsmen was also wounded. When the ambulance driver was killed upon reaching the casualties, he himself administered the necessary first aid to his comrades and pulled them to safety. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Di Lavore and the United States Naval Service.
