The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Howard C. Dickey (MCSN: 274270), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company D (Scout), Fourth Tank Battalion, Division Special Troops, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against the enemy Japanese on Parry Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Island, on 22 February 1944. With the advance of his company halted by relentless enemy fire from brush-covered entrenchments, Sergeant Dickey unhesitatingly led part of his company through the dense thickets in a vicious thrust against the concealed hostile positions, successfully destroying the underground Japanese fortifications and their trapped defenders. By his cool courage in the face of hidden dangers, aggressive leadership and unswerving devotion to duty, he contributed materially to furthering the advance of his company and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
