The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Fred Devenney, Jr. (MCSN: 362667), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Member of a Combat Patrol serving with the SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, 14 July 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Devenney rendered valiant service during operations on this strategically important island. As a member of a squad with limited fire power and demolitions, he was assigned to mopping up operations in Target Area 561 and, repeatedly exposing himself in order to draw fire from the caves, was instrumental in the destruction of twelve Japanese and the burning in caves of an untold number of the enemy before he was mortally wounded. By his self-sacrificing spirit and daring initiative in seeking out the enemy, Private First Class Devenney contributed materially to the ultimate success of this vital campaign. His valiant conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
