The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Marx D. Detroy (MCSN: 364202), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while acting as Staff Sergeant of a Platoon of Assault Engineers serving with the Twenty-Second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, on 21 July 1944. Skillfully utilizing his extensive knowledge of assault engineering tactics, Corporal Detroy molded the men in his unit into a superb fighting team during the period of indoctrination prior to actual operations, instilling in them a high degree of combat efficiency. Subsequently landing with his group under an intense barrage of hostile rifle, machine-gun and mortar fire which had destroyed several of our landing craft and killed many of the embarked troops, he courageously advanced upon the Japanese emplacement with demolition charges and succeeded in annihilating the enemy objective before he was fatally wounded by hostile fire. Corporal Detroy’s inspiring leadership and valiant devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
