The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Adelbert V. DePuy (MCSN: 437041), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving in a Platoon of Company A, First Battalion, Twentieth Marines (Engineer), FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 6 July 1944. Assuming command of his platoon in the absence of his platoon leader, Sergeant DePuy skillfully organized and directed an assault against a heavily fortified Japanese-held cave which was retarding the advance of our forces. Fully aware of the extreme danger, he personally placed a demolition charge and, following the explosion, proceeded to the area to ascertain the extent of damage. Seriously wounded by a hostile grenade, he refused assistance and valiantly continued directing his platoon until it was safely evacuated from the area. By his daring initiative, inspiring leadership and outstanding fortitude in the face of grave peril, Sergeant DePuy contributed essentially to the success of our operations against this vital hostile stronghold and his zealous devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
