The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Marvin L. DeMarsche (MCSN: 446715), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Gunner serving with the Third Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on the Asan-Adelup Beachhead, Guam, Mariana Islands, on 24 and 25 July 1944. With nine gunners in his section either killed or seriously wounded during a series of vicious counterattacks by the enemy against his company’s position, Private First Class DeMarsche remained steadfast at his weapon and directed a steady, withering stream of fire against the fanatical onrushing Japanese. Although wounded four times during the night by hostile small arms and hand grenades, he stoically refused to leave his post and, fighting a valiant battle, personally accounted for at least twenty of the enemy before he was mortally wounded shortly before dawn. By his cool courage, unflinching devotion to duty and great personal valor in the face of grave peril, Private First Class DeMarsche assisted materially in preventing a hostile break-through of our lines, and his selfless conduct throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
