The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Sandy DeMarino (MCSN: 408362), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 23 June 1944. Wounded while leading a group of Marines in clearing out snipers holding up an advance, Corporal DeMarino, refusing medical treatment, heroically continued to advance and, although forced to fire his rifle with one hand, succeeded in eliminating all enemy resistance in the area, thereby enabling his platoon to move forward. By his courage and determined efforts despite intense pain, Corporal DeMarino contributed materially to the success of his company’s mission and his unflinching devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
