Commanding General, 4th Marine Division: Serial 14704 (June 9, 1946)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Cyrus H. DeHart (MCSN: 841311), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Squad Leader, serving with Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 25 February 1945. When the Japanese attempted a night infiltration of our lines, Corporal DeHart voluntarily left his foxhole, despite the heavy grenade, mortar and rifle fire blanketing the area, to assist in the evacuation of five wounded Marines from a machine-gun position which had been rendered ineffective by enemy action. Again braving the hostile fire in company with another Marine, he valiantly made his way to the abandoned machine gun, put it back in action in another position and poured a devastating stream of fire which materially aided in halting the enemy advance. His resolute courage, indomitable fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty served as an inspiration to his comrades and reflect great credit upon Corporal DeHart and the United States Naval Service.
