The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Roy L. Deal (MCSN: 815881), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Radio Operator in Company B, Fourth Amphibian Tractor Battalion, Third Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, on 21 July 1944. When forced to leave his vehicle after it had been wrecked by two direct hits from an enemy field piece during landing operations on Guam, Corporal Deal guided amphibian tractors to groups of wounded on the beach and assisted in the evacuation of the survivors. When a hospital corpsman became a victim of enemy fire while rendering first aid to other members of the Battalion, Corporal Deal immediately went to his assistance and, following the directions of the corpsman, carried out first aid activities until wounded by enemy sniper fire. His outstanding initiative, cool courage and selfless devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
