The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert Nelson Davis (MCSN: 0-38717), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader, attached to Company C, First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, 10 June 1945. When his platoon was enfiladed by a hostile machine gun while crossing a stream bed during an assault on an enemy strong point, Second Lieutenant Davis advanced his platoon to its objective through intense fire and, despite heavy casualties, took up an exposed position and directed automatic rifle fire which annihilated the hostile crew and put the machine gun out of action. In the face of determined and relentless counterattacks, he consolidated his position, where he remained until severely wounded. His superb courage and unwavering devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Second Lieutenant Davis and the United States Naval Service.
