The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Robert F. Davis (MCSN: 326214), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 17 May 1945. During the fierce fighting in the Naha-Shuri sector, the platoon to which Corporal Davis’s machine-gun section was attached was pinned down by heavy enemy fire in its third attempt to seize a fanatically defended position, Corporal Davis although wounded, voluntarily remained to supervise and assist in the evacuation of ten of his men. He then made several trips alone through heavy enemy fire to recover his machine gun and ammunition which were essential for the night defense. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
