The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Monroe R. Davis (MCSN: 0-17228), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Headquarters Company and Adjutant of the First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 1 August 1944. Boldly organizing a patrol consisting of command post personnel in counterattacking a Japanese patrol which was attacking the battalion command post, First Lieutenant Davis personally killed six Japanese soldiers and prevented the loss of any personnel of the command post. On numerous occasions, he bravely volunteered for patrols to destroy snipers which were interfering with the operation of the command post. His leadership, courage in the face of grave danger and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
