The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Field Music First Class Edwin L. Davis (MCSN: 514410), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Messenger of Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 7 March 1945. When his assault platoon’s mission was seriously jeopardized because of an ammunition shortage during an attack against a hostile strong point, Field Music First Class Davis acted on his own initiative to collect ammunition from the reserve platoon. Although painfully wounded, he made several trips through heavy enemy small-arms and machine-gun fire to transport and distribute it to the men of his unit in the front line. His initiative, unselfishness and personal courage reflect the highest credit on Field Music First Class Davis and the United States Naval Service.
