The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Edward F. Davis (MCSN: 813437), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ammunition Carrier with a Machine Gun Platoon of Company G, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 2 May 1945. When his platoon was pinned down by extremely heavy machine-gun and rifle fire from cleverly concealed positions and suffered very heavy casualties, Private First Class Davis recovered the squad’s machine gun from the wounded gunner and moved to a position in front of the platoon despite serious wounds in the right arm. Sweeping the hostile positions with an intense hail of fire, he was able to neutralize the enemy fire sufficiently to allow the evacuation of the wounded and withdrawal of the Platoon, retiring only after rendering his weapon useless to the enemy. By his initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and untiring devotion to duty, he upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
