The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles L. Davis (MCSN: 434410), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Member of a Rifle Platoon of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 25 July 1944. While his platoon was advancing over rugged terrain, Private First Class Davis volunteered to act as point although he knew that a numerically superior hostile force was waiting in ambush in a heavily wooded draw. After the enemy ambush had been repulsed, leaving a 37-mm. field piece, he voluntarily moved forward alone to cover his squad while they dismantled the gun. When a force of about fifty Japanese counterattacked, he staunchly held his ground, delivering effective rifle and grenade fire which annihilated nine of the enemy and enabled the squad to withdraw. By his courage, daring initiative and devotion to duty, Private First Class Davis upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
