The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Field Music First Class Carl R. Davis (MCSN: 963654), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifleman of Company K, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 2 May 1945. Although severely wounded early in the night by an enemy mortar shell and suffering intense pain, Field Music First Class Davis remained at his post in an exposed flank position throughout the night. When the enemy attempted to infiltrate the platoon’s position, he contributed materially to the infliction of heavy losses on the Japanese with hand grenades. His fighting spirit, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
