The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class James G. David (MCSN: 347481), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Group Leader of Company C, First Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 8 July 1944. While his company was advancing against stiff enemy resistance south of Marpi Point, Private First Class David killed twenty Japanese soldiers with the assistance of one other man. By his aggressive action on the beach, he enabled the attack to keep moving and prevented the enemy from flanking the company with machine-gun fire, thereby contributing materially to the success of the attack. His courage, initiative and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
