The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Delmar Daniel (MCSN: 913532), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader of Company E, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 7 May 1945. Held up during an assault on a heavily-fortified position by fire from a hostile pillbox while leading his squad through a fire-swept area to a point of vantage in advance of the assault troops in order to deliver flanking fire on the enemy, Corporal Daniel advanced alone and destroyed the pillbox and its occupants with grenades, thereby permitting his machine gun to be emplaced, deliver deadly fire on the enemy position and enable his company to continue the advance. Although wounded while single-handedly assaulting the pillbox, Corporal Daniel refused evacuation until his machine gun was in position and firing. His outstanding courage and loyal devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
