The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph S. Dambrosio (MCSN: 337219), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 8 May 1945. Painfully wounded by hostile machine-gun fire while participating in an attack on a heavily-fortified enemy hill, Corporal Dambrosio, while awaiting evacuation, observed a wounded Marine lying in an exposed position subjected to hostile machine-gun fire, and despite the pain from his wounds, crawled forward through intense hostile fire and brought his comrade to a place of safety. His outstanding courage and unselfish devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
