The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant LaVarre L. Daley (MCSN: 446645), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifle Squad Leader of the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, (reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, Third Amphibious Corps, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, on 28 July 1944. When his squad’s position came under heavy artillery and machine-gun fire and was outflanked by an enemy force, Sergeant Daley bravely moved from position to position to direct and control the fire of his men. Observing three Japanese troops attacking a friendly tank, he advanced in full view of the attackers and destroyed all three. His indomitable courage in the face of hostile attack and his devotion to duty reflect great credit on Sergeant Daley and the United States Naval Service.
