The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Vincent A. Daigler (MCSN: 0-12982), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a platoon leader attached to a company of the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, Western New Britain, on January 6, 1944. When his company was engaged in a vigorous assault on the enemy in heavy rainfall and dense jungle undergrowth, First Lieutenant Daigler valorously disregarded his own safety and led his brave platoon forward despite withering hostile fire, closing with the determined Japanese forces. Although severely wounded he fought gallantly on and, through his inspiring courage and invincible spirit, materially assisted in defeating the enemy, inflicting numerous casualties and driving the remainder from their position. First Lieutenant Daigler’s superb leadership and unflinching devotion to duty in the face of grave danger were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
