The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Michael J. D’Agostino (MCSN: 450416), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Twenty-Second Marines, Fifth Amphibious Corps, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Engebi and Parry Islands, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, from February 18 to 22, 1944. Courageously pushing forward to an exposed position on the airstrip apron, Private First Class D’Agostino boldly opened fire with his rifle on Japanese troops harassing the left flank of his battalion and, in a daring single-handed battle, accounted for six of the enemy. Later placed in charge of his unit when his sergeant and the assistant squad leader became casualties, he displayed exceptional efficiency and aggressiveness and, although comparatively inexperienced in combat, moved in front of his squad, often exposing himself to heavy fire and continuing his valiant advance after being shaken and wounded by Japanese mortar fire. Private First Class D’Agostino’s fearless leadership and outstanding devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
