The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John N. Currie (MCSN: 881230), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, Fifth Tank Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 24 February 1945. Dismounting from his tank in the face of intense hostile mortar, artillery and small arms fire, Private First Class Currie proceeded on foot to the aid of another tank which had been destroyed by the enemy and rescuing the only survivor of the destroyed vehicle carried him to his own tank and subsequently to a medical aid station behind the lines. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
