The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Clifford T. Crook (MCSN: 809367), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Saipan in the Marianas on 29 June 1944. When his platoon was held up by an overwhelming concentration of enemy machine gun fire during a furious attack, Private First Class Crook voluntarily led a medium tank forward. Boldly pointing out hostile machine gun positions he directed the fire of his tank with relentless determination and accuracy against the strongly fortified emplacements, fearlessly disregarding all personal danger and continuing his valiant efforts until fatally struck down by a savage burst from a powerful Japanese gun. By his aggressive initiative, unfailing skill and indomitable fighting spirit, Private First Class Crook contributed materially to the ultimate conquest of this vital enemy stronghold, and his great personal courage and resolute conduct throughout a period of fierce hostilities upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
