The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert J. Craig (MCSN: 347084), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division in combat against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on 25 October 1942. Patrolling the rear area of his company for enemy troops reported to have infiltrated through the Third Battalion, Seventh Marines’ lines, Private First Class Craig and two companions encountered fifteen enemy soldiers in a deep draw. Armed with pistols, rifles and hand grenades he and his comrades with grim determination and undaunted courage, closed in on the Japanese killing the entire group and destroying one heavy machine gun. His indomitable fighting spirit was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
