The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Guy T. Crader (MCSN: 278264), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 2 July 1944. When intense hostile machine gun and mortar fire halted the advance of his company, Corporal Crader courageously worked his machine gun section across open terrain under enemy fire to set up his guns and return the barrage, thereby neutralizing the Japanese gun fire and contributing materially to the successful withdrawal of his company to a better position where lines could be set up for the night. Although wounded in this action, he remained with his men to direct their fire and when orders were received to withdraw he picked up one weapon alone and worked his way through the enemy fire to take it back safe to our lines. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
