The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Andrew J. Cozzone (MCSN: 452786), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Group Leader in a Rifle Squad of Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 28 July 1944. When his platoon was pinned down by heavy flanking machine gun fire emanating from a concealed position, Corporal Cozzone courageously advanced alone through hostile fire to locate the hostile weapon entrenched in the mouth of a cave one hundred yards forward of our lines. Boldly directing rifle and grenade fire against the position he killed six of the enemy, including the machine gun crew and protecting riflemen and then carried the captured weapon back to his unit. By his fortitude, daring initiative and devotion to duty, Corporal Cozzone upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
