The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Jack L. Coulter (MCSN: 248899), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade in action against enemy Japanese forces on Engebi and Parry Islands, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands from 18 to 23 February 1944. Refusing first aid for wounds sustained during an assault landing Platoon Sergeant Coulter joined his platoon, repeatedly exposing himself to enemy machine gun and mortar fire in a successful effort to maintain the organization and combat efficiency of his unit and continued in his heroic endeavor until he was again seriously wounded. His initiative, courageous leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
