The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Frank V. Costanza (MCSN: 332686), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with a Marine Infantry Battalion during action against enemy forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 18 June 1944. While participating in a fire fight with the enemy, one of the members of Sergeant Costanza’s squad was wounded. Sergeant Costanza and another member of the squad started across open terrain under intense enemy fire to bring back the wounded man. In moving across the terrain, the other man was also wounded. Sergeant Costanza, with complete disregard for his own safety, carried him back to safety, and then went out alone to bring back the man who had originally been wounded. His personal valor and tenacious devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
