The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Harvey E. Corn (MCSN: 312767), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as leader of a Rifle Squad of Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands during World War II, repeatedly exposing himself to intense artillery and small arms fire on 15 June 1944. Sergeant Corn rallied his men and organized the ground in his sector. Although he was seriously wounded he refused medical aid remaining at his post to repulse a counter attack and later aiding in covering the withdrawal of his company to a better defensive position. Returning to action before his wounds had healed he again took command of his squad skillfully leading them through the following days of the operation and constantly volunteering for patrols which resulted in the elimination of many small resistance groups. His leadership, courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Corn and the United States Naval Service.
