The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles R. Corliss (MCSN: 531075), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands from 15 June to 9 July 1944. When a comrade received the full blow and effect of an explosive missile thrown by a Japanese soldier, Private First Class Corliss promptly went to the aid of the wounded man. Fully aware that the man was carrying five sticks of dynamite which if detonated would cause many casualties; he calmly stripped him of the dynamite and cut away the fiercely burning clothes. By his courage and grave concern for the safety of others, he saved the life of one man and prevented injuries to others and his heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
