The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Gunnery Sergeant Maurice L. Cook (MCSN: 252725), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands on 22 June 1944. Promptly assuming command of his platoon when the leader became a casualty during a furious attack against heavily fortified, Japanese held hill 504, Gunnery Sergeant Cook skillfully reorganized his men under constant, intense barrages of hostile machine gun and mortar fire then boldly led them in a brilliantly executed attack. Setting up an effective defense against determined enemy counter attacks, he repeatedly exposed himself to the enemy’s fierce opposition in order to gain more advantageous firing positions for his men and despite the tremendous odds fought unceasingly against the fanatic Japanese until fatally struck down by a bursting shell. By his forceful and inspiring leadership, outstanding fortitude and cool and courageous action in the face of grave peril, Gunnery Sergeant Cook contributed essentially to the success of our operations against this vital hostile stronghold and his unrelenting devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. Gunnery He gallantly gave his life for his country.
