The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal John J. Connors (MCSN: 290607), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Marine Raider Battalion during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tulagi, Solomon Islands on August 7, 1942. Attacked at night by numerically superior Japanese troops, Corporal Connors greatly aided the men of his squad in their efforts to hold their position by his quick thinking and admirable valor in picking up Japanese hand grenades and throwing them back into the enemy ranks. Through his courage and skill he undoubtedly saved the lives of many of his comrades. His conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
