The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Harry S. Connor (MCSN: 0-6412), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, from November 1 to 4, 1942. As Operations Officer of the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division in the area of the Matanikau River, Captain Connor displaying great courage and leadership commanded a reinforced company which was successful in cutting off hostile lines of communication to the enemy’s rear. Withstanding strong counter attacks by the Japanese in their desperate attempt to reestablish communications, he defied a fierce mortar and machine gun barrage in order to spot for the artillery which was laying down fire to aid the Marine defense. His outstanding capability in estimating the situation and carrying out orders in the face of grave danger reflects great credit upon the United States Naval Service.
