The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Howard D. Comin (MCSN: 280448), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Marine Fighting Squadron TWO HUNDRED ELEVEN (VMF-211), in action against enemy Japanese forces on Wake Island from 8 to 23 December 1941. Steadfastly refusing hospitalization and treatment for his own wounds Sergeant Comin continued to aid in evacuating wounded Marines during the devastating attack of 8 December and persisted in rendering services to his squadron when physically handicapped and under grave danger from daily hostile aircraft attack. Undaunted by his own disabilities when again raided on 23 December he moved forward with the front ranks and, fighting gallantly, aided in driving back repeated Japanese attacks until mortally wounded by hostile fire. His indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to duty throughout reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Comin and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
