The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Donald L. Marx, United States Air Force, for gallantry in connection with military operations against an opposing armed force near Ben Het Special Forces Camp, Republic of Vietnam, on 24 February 1969. On that date, hostile forces had launched a heavy artillery attack against the strategic camp placing the lives of the camp’s defenders in grave danger. Captain Marx immediately responded to the Camp Commander’s plea for help and courageously entered the known anti-aircraft environment in his unarmed light observation aircraft to search out the hostile positions. Through Captain Marx’s heroic efforts the positions were located and later under his command were destroyed thereby preventing further destruction and saving the lives of many of the camp’s defenders. By his gallantry and devotion to duty Captain Marx has reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
