The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Jimmy Colagerakis (MCSN: 471020), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Group Leader of a Rifle Squad serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 9 July 1944. Courageously leading his group in every attack throughout this period Corporal Colagerakis repeatedly volunteered as scout and patrol leader boldly moving into enemy territory to obtain vital information. When his company was pinned down on its final objective on 9 July he skillfully maneuvered his group into advantageous firing positions and in the face of accurate and intense hostile volleys ably directed his men in delivering vigorous fire upon well-concealed Japanese riflemen. Mortally wounded during this heroic action, Corporal Colagerakis, by his fearless fighting spirit and unflagging zeal had contributed essentially to the successful invasion and occupation of this strategically important island and his unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
