The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Tom R. Coffey (MCSN: 0-16784), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Second Battalion, Twenty-Fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tinian, Mariana Islands on 24 July 1944. Dispatched as leader of a rifle platoon to wipe out a Japanese sniper strong point, First Lieutenant Coffey voluntarily exposed himself to a fanatic enemy to place demolition charges in the area and laboring tirelessly and with outstanding courage despite the extreme danger, steadfastly continued his perilous task until mortally struck down by the enemy. By his daring initiative, exceptional fortitude, and zealous devotion to the completion of an important mission. First Lieutenant Coffey contributed materially to the success of our operations against this heavily-fortified stronghold and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
