The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Authur E. Clements, Jr. (MCSN: 376727), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the THIRD Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 9 August 1944. Informed that a Marine lay wounded and helpless on an exposed area nearby where intense enemy fire made rescue work extremely hazardous, Private First Class Clements with members of his wire team unhesitatingly started to the aid of the helpless man, although immediately pinned down by Japanese fire, counterattacked and continued firing until their ammunition was expended. Replenishing his supply at the rear, Private First Class Clements, selflessly disregarding his own safety again attempted to reach the wounded man but was killed before attaining his objective. His valiant sacrifice and outstanding devotion to duty throughout at the risk of his own life reflect great credit upon Private First Class Clements and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
