The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Norman B. Clavey (MCSN: 465605), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Rifle Group Leader of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-Third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 10 February 1945. Exposing himself to severe enemy machine gun, rifle and mortar fire, Corporal Clavey grasped an automatic rifle moved forward of his company and standing erect to bring his fire into an enemy trench from which fire was holding up his unit’s advance, emptied four magazines killing ten hostile soldiers and putting two machine guns out of action. Returning to his group he led it forward to its objective. By his initiative and cool courage, he spurred his men to advance and his unselfish devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
