The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert V. Clark (MCSN: 533785), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Eighteenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese force on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, 3 July 1944. When the forward movement of our troops in one sector was being held up by heavy fire from a Japanese emplacement, Private First Class Clark on his own initiative courageously exposed himself to intense enemy fire while advancing on the emplacement and succeeded in destroying it with demolitions. Although killed by a hostile sniper immediately following his heroic set he had insured the safe and rapid advance of friendly troops through this area and by his valiant spirit of self-sacrifice and steadfast devotion to duty had contributed materially toward the ultimate success of a vital campaign. His courageous conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
