The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Frank C. Clark (MCSN: 0-13866), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of the Second Engineer Battalion, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, on 2 August 1944. When his Battalion Command Post was attacked by approximately one hundred and fifty Japanese, First Lieutenant Clark worked his way through the intense fire to a position near the point of attack and skillfully threw demolition charges into the hostile ranks killing many of the enemy. Repeatedly making his way through heavy hostile machine gun and rifle fire he personally evacuated several Marine casualties until serious wounds necessitated his own evacuation. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Services.
