    The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private Charles Veal, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 29 September 1864, while serving with Company D, 4th U.S. Colored Infantry, in action at Chapin’s Farm, Virginia. Private Veal seized the national colors after two Color Bearers had been shot down close to the enemy’s works, and bore them through the remainder of the battle.
